Padabhyanga,
massage of the feet and hands, tones the whole body and calms the
nerves. This treatment starts off with an aromatherapy foot bath,
followed by a massage. Nerves from all the organs in the head and body
terminate in the feet. The feet are also known to contain reflex points
to all organs and parts of the body.
Foot massage is very effective because the feet contain many "sandhis"
or joints: fifteen sandhis can be found in each foot. Lymph nodes exist
within each joint and flexibility of these joints is important for
remaining relaxed and happy.
A regular Padabhyanga with organic, herbalised oil helps prevent
cracking and roughness of the skin, as well as dryness, cracks,
fatigue, sciatica, cramps, and contraction of ligaments, vessels and
muscles of the feet and legs. It is also useful to eliminate or reduce
infections caused by fungi and bacteria.
Padabhyanga removes excess Vata from the body, promoting strong limbs and feet, strength for walking and sound sleep.
Self-padabhyanga is best done before bed-time, rubbing the soles and
top of the feet with some warm (sesame) oil. Leaving the oil on
overnight promotes sound sleep and a calm mind. For added enjoyment add
a few drops of your favourite aroma oil and wrap up in cotton socks.
