Nasya or nasal cleansing, is a special treatment for the head, neck, shoulders and sinuses. It is a facial rejuvenation and nasal decongestion treatment, including a massage, a facial heat treatment, herbalised vapor and herbalised decongesting drops. In Ayurveda, the nasal passage (nasya) is considered the gateway to the head and brain and the way to reach the additional sense organs located in this area (smell, sight, taste and hearing).
The purpose of Nasya is to remove impurities from the head via the nasal passages, bringing increased clarity to the brain physiology. The medicinal herbal mixtures and oils
are inhaled, clearing the sinuses and draining excess fluid and mucus, thereby decreasing the accumulated kapha which tends to build up in the head.
Mucus is pure kapha and kapha types are most likely to suffer from it, though a kapha imbalance will produce the same result in other doshas. Excess mucus or kapha can build up to cause pressure headaches, sharp pains behind the eyes, impaired breathing, hearing and sense of taste and smell as well as disturbed memory, allergies, chronic sinusitis and tinnitus (irritating sounds in the ears). These can all be improved with Nasya which keeps the nasal passage clear.
Prana, "vital breath", or the life-giving energy which keeps our body and soul together and keeps us alive, moves through this passage also. The base of the brain is right behind the nasal cavity: Nasya is said to stimulate the base of the brain through its effect on the olfactory nerves, bringing greater clarity and balance to the mind, brain and senses.
In addition, the Vedic texts describe that Nasya" gives a brilliant mind and a beautiful face and is good to prevent wrinkles." It affects all the nerves from the clavicular area upward and can be helpful in treatment of all disorders from the neck up. It is often prescribed for headaches and is also given in the case of epilepsy, facial paralysis resulting from a stroke and hemiphlegia.
