At the end of each day, after impurities from different parts of the body have been loosened and drawn into the intestinal tract, the patient receives a Basti or enema.
Medicated enemas, of which Ayurveda lists well over a hundred, are used for various specific reasons; in general, this treatment is used to flush the loosened doshas out through the intestinal tract.
In the Ayurvedic texts, it is often mentioned that although an enema only cleanses the intestines, it purifies the whole body from head to toe, making bastis one of the most important aspects of treatment.
The Vedic texts say that by basti alone 50 % of disorders can be cured. This is because the primary seat of Vata is in the colon, and the removal of its excess is extremely important for guiding the other doshas back into balance.
Traditionally, Ayurveda says that Vata, Pitta and Kapha imbalances are in the proportion of 4:2:1, so it is vital to balance Vata if you want to stop the majority of diseases at their beginning stages. Medicated bastis eliminate pathogenic ama (impurities) and facilitate the absorption of Prana.
Besides, a regular Basti will save us from many ailments of old age by keeping vata balanced, as this period of life is Vata-dominant. Ayurveda often uses two small, gentle enemas called "matra" and "shodana" basti.

Matra Basti
"This basti has a most powerful Vata pacifying effect, destroying lightness, roughness and coldness of"vayu" due to unctiousness. It quickly provides clarity of mind, energy, strenght, complexion and corpulence."

It is lubricating, balancing, nourishing, strenghtening and pacifying.
Shodana Basti
"The main treatment for Vata". Shodana Basti sustains age. It provides a happy life and gives strength, improves the digestive fire, the intellect, voice and complexion.
It pacifies and removes all disorders by eliminating the accumulation of impurities situated all over the body."
